PhD · Part H: Arrival and the residence permit
Can I work during my PhD?
Short answer: Carefully. The scholarship cannot be combined with other grants or research contracts, some calls set a limit on other income, and a study permit caps employment at 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year.
- Scholarship rules: no combining with research grants or other study grants, except money for stays abroad (University of Trento); some calls set an income ceiling, such as €14,000 a year at Tuscia (University of Tuscia decree).
- Permit rules: 20 hours a week and 1,040 a year for employment on a study permit (EU Immigration Portal).
- Teaching assistance and tutoring inside the university are common for PhD students. Ask your doctoral committee before taking any paid work, and get approval in writing.
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
