Writing · Unit 4: Band 7 to 8.5
W44: Stuck at 6.5 in Writing? 5 honest reasons
Target band 7.5 to 8.5
"I've taken IELTS three times, and I always get 6.5 in Writing." If that sounds like you, you're not alone. Writing 6.5 is one of the most common stuck points for Bangladeshi students. The reasons are usually the same five things. This lesson names them honestly and gives you a plan to move past them.
Why this matters
Many universities and scholarships ask for 7.0 in Writing, or 6.5 with no band below 6.5. Being stuck at 6.5 can block your plans for months. And retaking the test without changing your approach usually gives the same result.
Reason 1: Your ideas aren't developed enough
You answer the question and give a position, but each idea is a short statement with a quick example. Band 7 needs ideas that are explained and supported.
Fix: fewer ideas, deeper development. Use the "so what?" test (W36) and the body paragraph formula (W31).
Reason 2: Your essay sounds memorised
Template introductions, a linker at the start of every sentence, the same structure for every question type. Examiners see this as mechanical.
Fix: natural 2-sentence introductions (W30), cohesion through referencing (W37), and matching your structure to the question type (W06).
Reason 3: Small grammar errors in most sentences
Articles, agreement, plurals, prepositions. Each one is small, but if most sentences have one, you can't reach band 7 in grammar, which needs frequent error-free sentences.
Fix: your top 5 error card and the 3-minute self-check (W40), plus focused lessons W14 to W17.
Reason 4: Forced vocabulary
Big words used wrongly, wrong collocations, or very informal phrases. This keeps Lexical Resource at 6.
Fix: precise, natural vocabulary and topic collocations (W19, W38).
Reason 5: You practise without feedback
This is the biggest one. Many students write 50 essays and check none of them carefully. They repeat the same mistakes 50 times. Writing practice without feedback mostly trains your mistakes.
Fix: get feedback regularly, from a trained teacher, a strong English user, or at least a careful self-review against the band descriptors. Keep a list of every correction.
A 6-week plan to break 6.5
| Week | Focus | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find your problems | Write 2 essays. Get detailed feedback. Make your top 5 error card. |
| 2 | Task Response | Plan 10 questions. Write 2 essays focusing on developed ideas. |
| 3 | Grammar accuracy | Daily 15-minute error drills. Write 2 essays with the self-check. |
| 4 | Coherence | Rewrite old paragraphs with natural cohesion. Write 2 essays. |
| 5 | Vocabulary | Topic collocations. Write 2 essays on different topics. |
| 6 | Full practice | 3 full timed tests (Task 1 and Task 2). Get feedback on at least one. |
Two good essays a week with feedback beats seven essays a week without.
Try it yourself
Look at your last three Writing scores, if you have them, or your last three practice essays. Which of the five reasons apply to you? Rank them.
Honest note
There's no trick that turns 6.5 into 7 overnight. Moving up usually takes consistent, focused work over weeks or months. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a Writing band, and that includes promises like "7 in 7 days".
Your task today
Write one essay. Then judge it honestly against the five reasons. Write one sentence for each: is this a problem for me?
