Writing · Unit 2: Common mistakes

W14: a, an, the: the Bangla speaker's biggest grammar gap

Target band 6 to 6.5

If an examiner reads 100 essays from Bangladeshi students, one mistake will appear in almost all of them: articles. "Government should take steps." "The education is important." "He is engineer." These small words, a, an and the, cause more grammar errors in our writing than almost anything else. Each one is small. Together, they pull your grammar score down.

Why this matters

Grammatical Range and Accuracy is a quarter of your score in each task. Band 7 needs frequent error-free sentences. If most of your sentences have an article mistake, they're not error-free. Fixing articles can turn many sentences from "almost right" into "right".

Why it's hard for us

Bangla doesn't have words that work exactly like a, an and the. We show "the" with endings like -ta or -ti (boi-ta, the book), and we often don't mark "a" at all. So our brain doesn't expect a separate small word before nouns. In English, almost every singular countable noun needs one.

The core rules

Rule 1: Singular countable nouns need an article.

  • He is an engineer. (Not: He is engineer.)
  • She bought a laptop.

Rule 2: Use "a" or "an" for one thing that isn't specific yet.

  • I need a new phone. (any phone)
  • Use an before a vowel sound: an hour, an idea. But write a university, because "university" starts with a "yoo" sound.

Rule 3: Use "the" when both reader and writer know which one.

  • The government should invest more. (the government of the country we're discussing)
  • I read a book. The book was about Rome. (second mention)
  • The best option, the first step, the largest city (superlatives and ordinals)

Rule 4: No article for general plural or uncountable nouns.

  • Children need exercise. (children in general)
  • Education is important. (Not: The education is important.)
  • Technology has changed our lives.

Rule 5: Country names usually have no article, with some exceptions.

  • in Bangladesh, in Italy, in Canada
  • but: the UK, the USA, the Netherlands

Wrong Right

A simple checking routine

After writing, look at every singular countable noun. Ask: does it have a, an, the, or a word like my, this, each? If not, add one.

Try it yourself

Correct the articles.

  1. Internet has changed way people communicate.
  2. She wants to become doctor.
  3. The pollution is serious problem in Dhaka.
  4. Government of Bangladesh has introduced new policy.
