W40: Error-free sentences and the 3-minute self-check

Target band 7.5 to 8.5

At band 7, the grammar descriptors expect frequent error-free sentences. At band 8, the majority of sentences are error-free. That means accuracy, not complexity, is what separates the top bands. And one of the simplest ways to improve accuracy is a short, focused check at the end of each task.

Why this matters

Most students make the same types of errors again and again. If you know your personal error types, you can find and fix many of them in just three minutes. That can lift several sentences from "almost right" to "error-free".

Know your top 5 errors

Look at your last five essays, or ask a teacher to mark them. Find the five errors you make most. For many Bangladeshi students, the list looks something like this:

  1. Missing or wrong articles (W14)
  2. Subject-verb agreement (W15)
  3. Plural -s missing ("many student")
  4. Prepositions (W16)
  5. Run-on sentences or comma splices (W17)

Your list might be different. Write yours on a small card.

The 3-minute self-check

Keep 3 minutes at the end of Task 2, and 2 minutes at the end of Task 1. Don't reread everything slowly. Instead, scan for your top errors, one at a time.

Time What to check
0:00 to 0:40 Articles: every singular countable noun
0:40 to 1:20 Verbs: agreement and tense
1:20 to 2:00 Plurals: after many, several, a number of
2:00 to 2:30 Spelling of your common mistakes
2:30 to 3:00 Long sentences: any run-ons?

Scanning for one error type at a time is faster and more accurate than trying to catch everything at once.

Typical fixes in a real check

Before: "Government should provide more fund for the education of children in rural area, it will help them to get better job in future."

After: "The government should provide more funding for the education of children in rural areas. This will help them to get better jobs in the future."

Six small fixes. One error-heavy sentence became two error-free sentences.

Write accurately from the start

The check helps, but it's better to make fewer errors as you write.

  • Use structures you're sure of. Save experimental grammar for practice essays.
  • Shorter sentences when tired. Errors increase in long sentences, especially near the end of the test.
  • Slow down slightly. Writing 10% slower often cuts errors noticeably.

Practise with feedback

You can't find errors you don't know you're making. Get your essays checked by a good teacher or a strong English speaker, at least sometimes. Keep a list of every correction. Your top 5 list should come from real feedback.

Try it yourself

Find and fix the errors.

"In recent year, number of people using internet have increase dramatically, this is because smartphone become cheaper."

Show the answers

"In recent years, the number of people using the internet has increased dramatically. This is because smartphones have become cheaper."

Honest note

Three minutes won't fix everything. But it reliably catches the errors you make most often, and those are the ones that cost you most.

Write your personal top 5 error card. Use it for the self-check on your next essay.
