Listening · Unit 4: Band 7 to 8.5
L36: From 30 to 35: what changes at band 8
Target band 7.5 to 8.5
Getting from band 6 to 7 is about learning the test. Getting from 7 to 8 is about something different. You already know the question types. You already know the tricks. Now the last five marks come from precision: no careless slips, and strong control in the hardest questions. This lesson shows you where those five marks hide.
Why this matters
Some universities, scholarships and professional routes ask for high Listening scores. Also, a high Listening score lifts your overall band, which can cover a weaker Writing score. Band 8 in Listening is very reachable for students who are already at 7.
Where band 8 students get their marks
Here's a typical band 8 score of about 35 out of 40:
| Part | Score |
|---|---|
| Part 1 | 10 / 10 |
| Part 2 | 9 / 10 |
| Part 3 | 8 / 10 |
| Part 4 | 8 / 10 |
Notice two things. First, Parts 1 and 2 are almost perfect. Second, Parts 3 and 4 still have mistakes. Band 8 doesn't mean perfect. It means no wasted marks.
Rule 1: Protect the easy 20
Parts 1 and 2 should give you 19 or 20 marks. If you lose 3 marks here, you're making band 8 almost impossible. These lost marks are almost always careless: spelling, plurals, word limits.
Fix: use the 4-point check from L21 on every single answer. Make it automatic.
Rule 2: Master Part 3 multiple choice
At band 7, students often lose 2 or 3 marks in Part 3 multiple choice. Band 8 students lose 1 or 0. The difference is patience. They wait for the decision, and they read the exact question word, like main or most.
Fix: redo L23 and L26, then study 10 Part 3 transcripts, marking every rejected option.
Rule 3: Train for Part 4 speed
In Part 4, answers can come two in one sentence. Band 8 students read one question ahead and write fast.
Fix: use shadowing (L37) and dictation (L38) to make your ears faster.
Rule 4: Hear the small words
At band 8, you need to catch words like a, the, not and only. These change meaning. "It's not only cheaper" is very different from "It's cheaper".
Fix: connected speech practice (L40).
Rule 5: Stay sharp for 30 minutes
Many band 7 students lose marks in Part 4 because they're tired. Their focus drops after 20 minutes.
Fix: stamina training (L42).
Try it yourself
Look at your last three practice tests. Fill in this table:
| Test 1 | Test 2 | Test 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parts 1 + 2 (out of 20) | |||
| Parts 3 + 4 (out of 20) |
If Parts 1 and 2 are below 19, start with Rule 1. If they're 19 or 20, focus on Rules 2 to 5.
Honest note
The jump from 7 to 8 can take longer than the jump from 6 to 7. The gains are smaller and harder to see. Be patient. Your mistake log (L35) will show progress even when your score doesn't move for a week or two.
