L42: Building 30-minute focus

Target band 7.5 to 8.5

Here's something many students notice but never fix. They do well in Parts 1 and 2. Then in Part 4, their mind starts to wander. They think about lunch, or about their score, or about nothing at all. Suddenly they've missed two answers. The problem isn't English. It's focus. And focus can be trained, like a muscle.

Why this matters

On the computer test, Listening, Reading and Writing are usually taken one after another, with no long break. That's more than two and a half hours of hard concentration. If your focus fades after 20 minutes, Part 4 and your Reading test will suffer. Stamina is part of the test, even if nobody says it.

Why our focus is weak

Most of us check our phones every few minutes. Our brains are trained for short videos and quick messages. Sitting for 30 minutes of pure listening, with no phone, feels long. That's normal in 2026. But it means you need to train focus on purpose.

A 3-week stamina plan

Week What to do
1 Two 15-minute listening blocks a day. Phone in another room.
2 One full Listening test a day, in one sitting, no pausing.
3 Three times a week, do a full Listening test followed straight away by a Reading test.

By week 3, you're copying the real test day. Your brain learns that a long session is normal.

Practise like the real exam

  • Use headphones. The test uses headphones, and they can feel tiring after a while.
  • Sit at a desk. Not on your bed.
  • No breaks between parts. The real test won't stop for you.
  • Morning practice. Many tests start in the morning. Practise at that time sometimes.

The one-breath reset

Between parts, take one slow breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Then eyes on the next questions. This tiny reset clears your head without wasting reading time.

Look after your body

Focus isn't only in your head.

  • Sleep. One bad night can cost you a band. Sleep well for the three nights before your test.
  • Eat. Have a proper breakfast on test day. An empty stomach makes focus drop fast.
  • Water. Stay hydrated, but don't drink a huge bottle right before you go in.

Try it yourself

Next practice test, write the time you first noticed your mind wander. Was it in Part 3? Part 4? That's your current focus limit.

Honest note

You can't stay 100% focused for 30 minutes. Nobody can. The goal is to notice when your mind drifts and bring it back fast. Training makes those drifts shorter.

Your task today

Do one full Listening test with your phone in another room. No pauses. Notice how your focus feels in Part 4.
