L43: 30-day podcast plan for Listening
Target band 7.5 to 8.5
Practice tests are important, but they're limited. There are only so many of them. Podcasts and radio give you endless free listening practice with real accents, real speed and real topics. This plan gives you 30 days of structured listening, about 20 to 30 minutes a day.
Why this matters
Your ears improve with hours of listening, not just hours of tests. When you listen to English every day for a month, test recordings start to feel slower and easier. That's your ears adjusting.
Free sources to use
- BBC Learning English. Short programmes made for learners, with transcripts. 6 Minute English is a good start.
- BBC Radio and BBC Sounds. Real British radio on science, history and society.
- ABC Listen. Australian radio and podcasts on many topics.
- TED Talks. Short talks on every subject, with transcripts. Many accents.
- University lecture channels. Many universities publish free short lectures online. Great for Part 4.
The daily routine (20 to 30 minutes)
- Listen once without stopping. (5 to 10 minutes)
- Write one sentence saying what it was about.
- Write five new or interesting words you heard. Check their spelling.
- Shadow one minute of the audio (L37).
- Optional: dictate three sentences (L38).

Choose topics you enjoy
If you love cricket, listen to cricket commentary. If you love technology, find tech podcasts. You'll listen longer when you're interested. But in week 4, push yourself into topics you don't know, like biology or archaeology. That's Part 4 training.
Use dead time
You don't need to sit at a desk for all of this. Listen on the bus, in a CNG, while walking, or while cooking. Just do steps 2 to 4 later, when you can write.
Track your progress
At the end of each week, rate yourself from 1 to 10. How much did you understand without the transcript? Write the number down each week and watch it rise.

Honest note
Podcasts won't replace practice tests. They build your ears. Tests build your test skills. You need both. Aim for one practice test every few days, and podcasts on the other days.
