The visa · Part B: The money

Does a scholarship cover it, or do I still have to prove funds?

Short answer: You still have to prove funds. A scholarship award letter is a document you add, not one that replaces the bank statements. The Dhaka checklist lists the scholarship letter and the financial proof as separate requirements, and says in terms that the letter does not replace the money proof (Dhaka checklist).

Why they do not cancel out

A scholarship is a promise of future payments to a student who arrives and enrols. The money proof answers a different question: can you support yourself from the day you land. One does not answer the other.

What a scholarship does do

  • It reduces what you need to find yourself, which makes the rest of the file easier to explain.
  • A funded PhD position is different in kind. PhD applicants show the position and its gross yearly amount, at least €16,243 (PhD guide, P24).
  • A DSU application is not a scholarship. Until it is awarded it is a request, and it proves nothing about your funds (B19, M23).

The part worth planning for

If your scholarship covers tuition but not living costs, you still have to show you can live. Build that into the plan from the start rather than hoping the letter carries the file.

This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
