Master's · Part H: Arrival and the residence permit
Can I work while I study?
Short answer: Yes, up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year (EU Immigration Portal).
- The rule lets weekly hours be cumulated over 52 weeks within the 1,040 limit. Bocconi reads this as allowing, for example, 40 hours a week for six months (Bocconi); others read it strictly. Get written confirmation before going above 20 in any week.
- Paid internships and university student jobs are common at master's level. Padova, for example, offers 200 hour student collaborations (University of Padova).
- A work contract cannot run longer than your permit, and failed exams put renewal at risk.
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
