Listening · Unit 4: Band 7 to 8.5

L44: Practice score 8, real exam 7: why?

Target band 7.5 to 8.5

This is one of the most common stories in IELTS. A student scores 8 or 8.5 in practice tests at home. They walk into the exam confident. Then the result comes: 7. They feel cheated. But usually nothing went wrong with the marking. The gap was in how they practised. This lesson explains why the gap happens and how to close it.

Why this matters

If your practice score is higher than your real ability, you'll make bad decisions. You might book the test too early, or stop preparing too soon. Honest practice gives you an honest prediction.

Seven reasons practice scores are too high

  1. You paused or replayed. Even once. In the real test, there's no pause button.
  2. You marked too kindly. You accepted a spelling mistake because "I knew the word". The real test won't.
  3. You'd seen the test before. Repeating a Cambridge test gives a fake high score.
  4. You used speakers, not headphones. Headphones feel different and can be tiring.
  5. You wrote on paper. The real test in Bangladesh is on computer, with only about 2 minutes to check.
  6. You did only Listening. On test day, Reading and Writing come straight after. Your focus is shared.
  7. You were relaxed. At home there's no pressure. In the exam hall, nerves are real.

How to make practice match the real test

At home Make it real
Pausing allowed No pausing, ever
Kind marking Strict marking, spelling counts
Old, repeated tests Fresh tests you've never seen
Speakers Headphones
Paper Type your answers on a laptop
Listening alone Listening, then Reading straight after
Afternoon, relaxed Morning, timed, desk, no phone

The safety margin rule

Aim for your practice scores to be at least half a band higher than your target, under real conditions. If you need 7.0, aim for consistent 7.5 in strict practice. That margin covers nerves and bad luck on the day.

What about mock tests?

Some test centres and coaching centres in Bangladesh offer full mock tests in exam conditions. If you can join one, it's useful. Choose one that uses official-style material and real timing. But don't pay for many of them. One or two is enough to feel the pressure.

Try it yourself

List your last three practice scores. Next to each, write which of the seven reasons applied. Be honest. How many points might you need to subtract?

Honest note

Sometimes students really do have a bad day. A cold, no sleep, a noisy room. It happens. If your real score is far below strict practice scores, you can look into the official remark option. Check the rules, cost and deadline on the official IELTS website first. But most of the time, the gap comes from practice habits.

Your task today

Do your next practice test with all seven "make it real" rules. Compare the score to your usual one.
