PhD · Part B: Am I eligible?
Which master's degree counts for a PhD?
Short answer: An official second cycle degree (European level 7) that would let you start a PhD in your own country, with no "substantial difference" from an Italian master's (MUR circular). Each call lists the accepted degrees, so read it line by line.
- Bangladesh: an MS, MSc, MA or MBA after a 4 year honours degree is a master's. A 1 year master's after a 4 year honours degree is still a master's.
- Long single degrees such as medicine are often treated like a single cycle master's, but confirm with the program office before applying.
- A Master universitario (Italian short course) is not enough. It does not replace a Laurea Magistrale or an equivalent foreign master's.
- Field match: some programs accept any related master's; others ask for specific backgrounds. The committee also judges your fit through the research project.
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
