PhD · Part C: Find and apply
Should I accept a PhD position without a scholarship?
Short answer: Almost never, unless you have other secure funding, such as a government scholarship or written funding from an employer.
- A "senza borsa" position gives you the PhD student title but no monthly payment.
- For the visa you still need to show at least €10,179.85 a year from lawful, traceable sources (MUR circular).
- Three years of full time research with no income is very hard. Ask the program office whether funded places have opened up in past years when funded candidates withdrew.
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
