Laurea Magistrale or Master universitario: what is the difference?
Short answer: A Laurea Magistrale is the full 2 year master's degree. A Master universitario is a shorter professional course. They are not the same, and many students mix them up.
| Laurea Magistrale | Master universitario (I or II livello) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Second cycle degree | Short specialisation course |
| Length | 2 years, 120 credits | At least 1 year, at least 60 credits |
| Opens a PhD? | Yes | No, it does not replace a Laurea Magistrale |
| Visa deadline | 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 | No fixed date, but before classes start |
| Fees | Public fee rules | Often much higher, set by each course |

Bhaia's honest note: If your plan is a PhD or a career in Europe, choose a Laurea Magistrale. Agents sometimes sell an expensive Master universitario as "a master's in Italy". Read the course type on Universitaly before you pay.
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
