Master's · Part C: Choose and apply

How do I write a statement of purpose and get recommendation letters?

Short answer: One page unless told otherwise, in your own words, specific to each course. Recommendation letters must come from the referee, not from you.

  1. Opening: what you want to study and why this course. Name one or two modules or labs.
  2. Background: your thesis, a project or a job task that prepares you. One real example beats ten adjectives.
  3. Why Italy and this university: concrete reasons.
  4. Plan: what you will do after, and how the course gets you there.
  5. Close: thank them.

Recommendation letters: from teachers or supervisors who know your work, on letterhead, signed, with email and phone. Many portals email the referee directly, so give real addresses. Never write or sign a letter in someone else's name.

Keep one honest story. The embassy also checks whether the course fits your past studies and plans. Your SOP, visa cover letter and interview answers should match.

This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
