Bachelor's · Part H: Arrival and the residence permit
Can I work while I study?
Short answer: Yes, up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year, as an employee (EU Immigration Portal).
- About the 20 hours: the rule lets weekly hours be cumulated over 52 weeks within the 1,040 yearly limit. Bocconi reads this as allowing, for example, 40 hours a week for six months (Bocconi); other sources read it strictly. Get written confirmation from your employer and university before going above 20 in any week.
- Your work contract cannot run longer than your permit.
- Universities offer paid student jobs too, such as Padova's 200 hour collaborations (University of Padova).
- Study comes first. Failed exams put your renewal at risk (B36).
This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
