Bachelor's · Part H: Arrival and the residence permit

How do I renew my permit, and what about exams?

Short answer: Apply at least 60 days before the permit expires, with proof that you are enrolled and passing exams (MUR circular).

  • Exams: at least one exam passed in the first year, at least two in each later year. In serious health cases or force majeure, one can be enough.
  • Time limit: a study permit cannot be renewed for more than three years beyond the normal length of your course.
  • Documents: the kit, a copy of your permit, an enrolment and exam certificate from the student office, proof of funds, health cover and housing (University of Parma). Same cost as the first time.
  • Changing course is possible with university approval. But if you formally withdraw from studies, your permit is revoked and you would need a new visa from home.

Bhaia's honest note: First year students fail exams more often than they expect, because of the language, the oral exams and loneliness. Pass at least one exam early. Your permit depends on it.

This page explains official rules in plain language. I am not an immigration adviser and I do not give visa advice. For that, always use official government sources. Rules change: confirm with your university, the embassy and VFS before you act.
