Writing · Unit 4: Band 7 to 8.5
W36: What band 7 Task Response really needs
Target band 7.5 to 8.5
You answer every part of the question. Your position is clear. And you still get 6.5 for Task Response. Why? Usually because your ideas are there, but they're thin. You state a point, add a quick example, and move on. Band 7 and above need ideas that are extended: explained, supported, and connected clearly to the question.
Why this matters
Task Response is a quarter of your Task 2 score, and Task 2 counts for more than Task 1. Moving from 6 to 7 in Task Response alone can lift your overall Writing score. For many Bangladeshi students, it's the biggest single improvement available.
What changes from band 6 to 7 to 8 (simplified)
| Band 6 | Band 7 | Band 8 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parts of the question | all addressed, some more than others | all addressed | all sufficiently addressed |
| Position | clear, but may become unclear or repetitive | clear throughout | well-developed and clear |
| Ideas | relevant, but some not fully developed | extended and supported, may over-generalise sometimes | relevant, extended and well supported |
This is a simplified summary. Read the official public band descriptors on the IELTS website for exact wording.
The "so what?" test
After each idea, ask: "So what? Why does this matter for the question?" If your paragraph doesn't answer that, it's not developed enough.
A band 6 paragraph
One advantage of working from home is saving time. People do not need to travel to the office. For example, in Dhaka, traffic is very bad. So working from home is good.
The idea is relevant. But it's a chain of short statements. Why does saving time matter? What happens with the time saved? The example is a fact, not an explanation.
The same idea at band 7 or above
One clear advantage of working from home is the time it saves. In large cities, commuting can take two hours or more each day, and this time is usually lost to stress and exhaustion rather than used productively. When employees no longer need to travel, they can start work fresher and use the extra time for exercise, family or further study. In cities like Dhaka, where heavy traffic makes even short journeys unpredictable, this benefit can make a real difference to workers' health and wellbeing.
What changed:
- The idea is explained: commuting time is lost to stress.
- The consequence is shown: workers start fresher and use the time well.
- The example is connected to the point, not just stated.
- It links to wellbeing, showing why it matters.
Avoid over-generalising
Band 7 writers qualify their claims.
| Over-general | Qualified |
|---|---|
| Everyone loves social media. | Many young people use social media daily. |
| Technology always makes life better. | Technology often makes everyday tasks easier. |
| Online learning is useless. | Online learning can be less effective for younger children. |
Fewer ideas, deeper development
Two well-developed ideas beat four undeveloped ones. If your plan has four reasons, choose the best two and develop them.
Try it yourself
Develop this band 6 sentence into a band 7 paragraph of about 80 words: "Public libraries are important because people can read books for free."
Sample answer: "Public libraries remain important because they give everyone access to knowledge, regardless of income. Books, newspapers and online resources can be expensive, and families on low incomes may not be able to afford them. A free library allows a student from such a family to prepare for exams or explore new subjects in the same way as wealthier classmates. In this sense, libraries help to reduce inequality in education."
Honest note
Developing ideas takes more words, so you may need fewer ideas to stay within 40 minutes. That's the right trade.
