W09: Task 1 without an overview

Target band 6 to 6.5

If you remember just one rule for Task 1, make it this one: always write an overview. The overview is a short summary of the main features of the visual. Without it, your Task Achievement score is usually limited, no matter how good your English is. And yet many students skip it, or write one that's just a list of numbers.

Why this matters

The IELTS band descriptors make the overview a key part of Task Achievement. A clear overview is part of what separates band 5 from band 6 and above in this criterion. It's the cheapest half band you'll ever earn.

What an overview is

An overview answers this question: If someone looked at this chart for five seconds, what would they notice?

It usually includes two or three of these:

  • the overall trend (up, down, stable)
  • the biggest and smallest items
  • the most striking change or difference
  • for a process: how many stages, and the start and end
  • for maps: the most important changes overall

What an overview is not

  • It's not a list of numbers. Keep detailed figures for the body paragraphs.
  • It's not a conclusion with opinions. No "This shows that the government should..."
  • It's not a repeat of the introduction.

Where to put it

You can put it at the end, or right after the introduction. I recommend right after the introduction. That way, you'll never forget it, even if you run out of time.

Example

Data (for a line graph): Percentage of households with internet access

Year Country A Country B Country C
2005 20% 45% 10%
2010 40% 60% 25%
2015 65% 70% 50%
2020 85% 75% 80%

Weak overview: "Country A started at 20% and rose to 85%, Country B went from 45% to 75%, and Country C increased from 10% to 80%."

This is just numbers. No main features.

Strong overview: "Overall, internet access rose significantly in all three countries. Country B had the highest figure at the start of the period, but by 2020 it had been overtaken by both Country A and Country C, which grew much more rapidly."

This gives the big picture: everything rose, and the order changed. No detailed numbers.

Useful overview phrases

  • Overall, ...
  • In general, ...
  • It is clear that ...
  • The most noticeable feature is ...
  • By far the largest ...

Overviews for other types

  • Process: "Overall, there are six stages in the process, beginning with the collection of raw materials and ending with packaging."
  • Map: "Overall, the town became more residential, with the farmland in the north replaced by housing."
  • Pie charts: "Overall, housing accounted for the largest share of spending in both years, while entertainment made up the smallest."

Try it yourself

Write an overview for this data: Sales of three drinks in a café (cups per day). Tea: 100 in 2020, 80 in 2025. Coffee: 50 in 2020, 120 in 2025. Juice: 30 in 2020, 35 in 2025.

Sample answer: "Overall, coffee sales grew dramatically and replaced tea as the most popular drink, while juice remained the least popular, with little change."

Honest note

An overview alone won't give you band 7. But without one, band 6 in Task Achievement is very hard. Make it a habit you never break.

Your task today

Take five Task 1 visuals from your Cambridge books. Write only the overview for each one, in two sentences.
