W03: Band 6 vs band 7 vs band 8 writing, side by side
Target band 5.5 to 6
It's hard to improve if you can't see what "better" looks like. In this lesson, you'll read the same introduction and body paragraph written at three levels. The ideas are similar. The difference is in how clearly they're answered, organised and expressed. The scores are estimates, to show the difference between levels.
Why this matters
Many students think a band 8 essay uses lots of rare words. It doesn't. Look carefully at the examples below. The biggest differences are clarity, development of ideas and accuracy, not fancy vocabulary.
The question
Some people believe children should start learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Band 6 (estimated)
Nowadays, learning foreign language is very important in this modern world. Some people think children should learn it in primary school and some people think secondary school. In this essay I will discuss both side and give my opinion.
Firstly, young children can learn language more easy. Because their brain is very flexible. Moreover, they have more time in primary school. Furthermore, if they start early they will be more good in future. For example, my cousin learned English from childhood and now he speak very well.
Why around 6:
- The question asks "to what extent do you agree", but the introduction says it will "discuss both sides". The position isn't clear.
- Ideas are listed, not developed. Why does more time help?
- Linking words (Firstly, Moreover, Furthermore) are mechanical.
- Grammar errors: foreign language (missing a), more easy, more good, he speak, a sentence starting with Because.
Band 7 (estimated)
It is often argued that children should begin learning a foreign language in primary school rather than waiting until secondary school. I largely agree with this view, mainly because younger children learn pronunciation more naturally and have more time to build their skills.
The main advantage of an early start is that young children pick up new sounds easily. A seven-year-old can often copy an accent more accurately than a teenager, who may already feel shy about making mistakes. Starting early also gives children more years of practice, so by the time they finish school, their language skills are likely to be much stronger.
Why around 7:
- Clear position ("I largely agree") with reasons in the introduction.
- Each idea is explained and supported.
- Mostly accurate grammar, with complex sentences.
- Natural linking (The main advantage, also, so).
Band 8 (estimated)
Whether foreign languages should be introduced in primary or secondary school is a common debate in education. In my view, an early start is generally more effective, provided that lessons are taught by well-trained teachers and focus on speaking rather than grammar rules.
Young children are particularly good at acquiring the sounds of a new language. Unlike adolescents, who often become self-conscious, primary pupils tend to imitate unfamiliar pronunciation without embarrassment, which allows them to develop a more natural accent. This advantage, however, depends heavily on the quality of teaching. If lessons consist mainly of memorising vocabulary lists, an early start may achieve little, which is why the approach matters as much as the age.
Why around 8:
- A precise position, with a condition ("provided that..."). This shows mature thinking.
- Ideas are developed and qualified. The writer considers a limit to their own argument.
- Precise vocabulary used naturally: self-conscious, imitate, acquiring.
- Varied, accurate complex sentences.
What changed from 6 to 8?
| Band 6 | Band 7 | Band 8 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | unclear | clear | clear and precise |
| Ideas | listed | explained | explained and qualified |
| Linking | mechanical | natural | invisible and smooth |
| Grammar | frequent errors | mostly accurate | very accurate, varied |
Honest note
These are short extracts, not full essays. Real band scores depend on the whole essay. Use these to see the direction of improvement, not as templates to copy.
