W01: IELTS Writing explained: Task 1, Task 2, 60 minutes

Target band 5.5 to 6

IELTS Writing has two tasks and one hour. That sounds simple. But many students walk in without knowing which task matters more, how long each one should take, or what the examiner is actually looking for. In this lesson, you'll see the full picture, so you can plan your hour like a strong writer.

Why this matters

Writing is the module where Bangladeshi students most often get their lowest score. Very often, the problem isn't English. It's how the hour is used. Students spend 35 minutes on Task 1, rush Task 2, and lose marks on the task that's worth more.

Minimum words 150 250
Suggested time 20 minutes 40 minutes
Weight Less More: Task 2 counts for more of your Writing score

The official IELTS website says Task 2 counts for more than Task 1. That's why it gets twice the time.

Task 1 in one sentence

You look at a visual, like a line graph showing internet use from 2000 to 2020, and write a short report of the main features. No opinions. Just a clear, accurate description.

Task 2 in one sentence

You read a statement or question, like "Some people think university education should be free. Do you agree or disagree?", and write an essay with a clear position, supported by reasons and examples.

My strongest advice: do Task 2 first

You can do the tasks in any order. Many teachers suggest starting with Task 2, because it's worth more. If you run out of time, it's better to have a weaker Task 1 than an unfinished Task 2. Try both orders in practice, and choose the one that works for you.

What the examiner looks for

Both tasks are marked on four areas (W02 explains them):

  1. Did you do what the task asked?
  2. Is your writing organised and connected?
  3. How good is your vocabulary?
  4. How good is your grammar?

Each area counts equally within a task.

Academic vs General Training

Task 2 is similar in both tests. Task 1 is different. In General Training, Task 1 is a letter, not a chart. See W07.

Try it yourself

  1. Which task is worth more?
  2. How many minutes should you spend on Task 1?
  3. Can you give your opinion in Task 1?
  4. What's the minimum word count for Task 2?
Show the answers

1) Task 2. 2) About 20. 3) No. 4) 250.

Honest note

Writing improves slowly, more slowly than Listening or Reading. Expect months, not weeks, if you're moving from 6 to 7. And you need feedback on your writing to improve, not just practice.
