S21: The Part 1 formula that always works

Target band 6.5 to 7

In lesson S10, we fixed one-word answers. Now let's build a simple system you can use for any Part 1 question. Once you know it, you'll never freeze on "Do you like...?" again.

Why this matters

Part 1 lasts about 4 to 5 minutes. It's your first impression. Good Part 1 answers relax you, warm up your English, and show the examiner right away that you can speak at length with control.

The formula: A + R + E

  • A: Answer. Give a direct answer in the first few words. Yes, no, it depends, sometimes.
  • R: Reason. Say why. Because..., since..., the main reason is...
  • E: Extra. Add one extra thing. An example, a detail, a contrast, or a change over time.

That's about 2 to 4 sentences, or around 15 to 25 seconds. Perfect for Part 1.

Example

Do you like rainy days?

A: "Yes, I really do."

R: "I find the sound of the rain really relaxing, and it cools everything down after the heat."

E: "Although, to be fair, it's not so fun when the roads in Dhaka flood and it takes two hours to get home."

Match the tense to the question

Part 1 questions come in a few common shapes. Each one needs a different tense. This is where many students lose easy grammar marks.

Question shape Example Tense to use
Do you...? Do you like music? Present simple
How often...? How often do you go out? Present simple + frequency words
Did you... as a child? Did you play outside as a child? Past simple, "used to"
Has it changed? Has your hometown changed? Present perfect
Will you / Would you...? Would you like to learn an instrument? Future, "would", "I'd love to"
What kind of...? What kind of food do you like? Present simple + examples

Sample answers for each shape

  • Did you play outside as a child? "Yes, all the time. I used to play cricket in the lane behind our building with the neighbourhood kids. We'd play until it got dark and our mothers started calling us."
  • Has your hometown changed? "Quite a lot, actually. There are many more shops and buildings now, and the roads have got much busier. Some of the open fields I remember from childhood have completely disappeared."
  • Would you like to learn an instrument? "I'd love to learn the guitar someday. I've always admired people who can just pick one up and play. But honestly, I don't think I'll have time until after my studies."

Start strong

Avoid starting every answer with "Yes, I like it." Try different openers:

  • "Definitely." / "Absolutely."
  • "Not really, to be honest."
  • "It depends."
  • "I used to, but not so much these days."
  • "I'd say so, yes."

Try it yourself

Use A + R + E and the right tense to answer these.

  1. Do you prefer mornings or evenings?
  2. Did you enjoy school when you were young?
  3. Has the way people shop changed in your country?
  4. Would you like to live in another city?

Honest note

Don't treat the formula like a script. If you say "Answer... reason... extra" in the same rhythm every time, it sounds robotic. Use it as a skeleton in your head. Sometimes the reason comes first. Sometimes the extra is a short story. That's fine.

Your task today

Write down 10 Part 1 questions, two of each shape from the table. Answer each one using A + R + E. Record the answers and check your tenses.
