S03: Band 6 vs 7 vs 8 speakers: hear the difference

Target band 5.5 to 6

It's hard to aim for band 7 if you don't know what band 7 sounds like. In this lesson, you'll read the same Part 3 question answered at three levels. For a video, record these with different speakers, or read them yourself with natural pauses and errors where marked. The scores are estimates, to show the direction of improvement.

Why this matters

Most students imagine band 8 means fancy vocabulary and a British accent. It doesn't. Listen to the examples below. The real differences are flow, how well ideas are developed, and accuracy.

The question (Part 3)

"Why do so many young people move from villages to big cities?"

Band 6 (estimated)

"Um... I think young people go to city because... there is more job. In village, there is not so many job. And also, um, education is good in city. Many good university is there. So... they want to go. Also city life is, um, more modern. They like it."

Why around 6:

  • Answers the question with relevant ideas.
  • Ideas are listed but not developed.
  • Noticeable hesitation (um, pauses).
  • Grammar errors: go to city, more job, many good university is.

Band 7 (estimated)

"Well, I'd say the main reason is jobs. In most villages, people mainly work in farming, and there aren't many other options, especially for educated young people. Cities like Dhaka have factories, offices and IT companies, so there's a much wider range of work. Education is another factor. Many of the best universities are in cities, so students move there to study, and then they often stay after graduating."

Why around 7:

  • Clear main reason, then explained.
  • A second reason, linked naturally (Education is another factor).
  • Few errors, with some complex sentences.
  • Natural spoken style (Well, I'd say).

Band 8 (estimated)

"I think it mostly comes down to opportunity. In rural areas, the economy tends to revolve around agriculture, so a young person with a degree often has very little chance to use it. Cities, on the other hand, concentrate jobs in industry and services, and they offer things like better universities and hospitals. That said, I don't think it's only about money. For a lot of young people, the city represents independence and a more exciting lifestyle, which can be just as strong a pull."

Why around 8:

  • A clear main idea, developed with explanation.
  • Natural, precise vocabulary: comes down to, revolve around, a strong pull.
  • A second angle that adds depth (That said, I don't think it's only about money).
  • Accurate grammar with varied structures, spoken fluently.

What changed from 6 to 8?

Band 6 Band 7 Band 8
Fluency hesitant smooth effortless
Ideas listed explained explained and extended
Vocabulary basic some precise words natural, precise, idiomatic
Grammar frequent errors mostly accurate accurate and varied

Notice that none of the band 8 words are rare. They're natural phrases used precisely.

Try it yourself

Answer the same question out loud for 45 seconds. Record it. Which level does it sound closest to?

Honest note

Don't memorise these answers. Examiners are trained to notice memorised language, and these are just examples of a level. Use them to understand the difference, then build your own answers.

Your task today

Record your answer, then try again, adding one explanation and one example. Compare the two recordings.
