Reading · Unit 5: Practice and exam day
R47: Full timed test with me
Target all levels
This is a guided full test session. You'll do a complete Academic Reading test from an official Cambridge IELTS book, under real conditions. Then you'll mark it strictly, review every mistake, and build a two-week plan. I won't print the test here, because it belongs to Cambridge. Use your own book, and choose a test you've never seen.
Why this matters
Doing parts of tests is useful for learning. But only a full, timed test shows you how you handle 60 minutes of pressure, time decisions and fatigue. And only an honest review turns that test into progress.
Part A: Set up (5 minutes)
- Laptop if possible, to copy the computer test. Phone in another room.
- A timer you can see, set to 60 minutes.
- Rough paper for your mini maps and time notes.
- Decide your time plan: 20-20-20, or 17-20-23 (R07).
Part B: Take the test (60 minutes)
- Write the clock time when you start each passage.
- Follow your checkpoints. If you're late, guess and move on.
- Use the 90-second rule (R14).
- Fill every answer before time ends.
Part C: Mark strictly (10 minutes)
- A spelling mistake is wrong.
- Breaking the word limit is wrong.
- A synonym instead of the passage word is wrong (in completion questions).
- Use the answer key and the score table in the same book.
Part D: Fill in your results
| Passage | Score | Time used | Main mistake reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | / 13 | min | |
| 2 | / 13 | min | |
| 3 | / 14 | min | |
| Total | / 40 |
(Some tests split the 40 questions differently. Use the real numbers from your test.)
Part E: Review with the 3-reason method (20 minutes)
For each wrong answer, find the proof in the passage and label it: Misread, Paraphrase, Time, Vocabulary or Careless (R41).
An example: Farhana's test
Farhana needs 7.0, which is about 30 out of 40.
| Passage | Score | Time used | Main mistake reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 11 / 13 | 24 min | Careless (2) |
| 2 | 9 / 13 | 22 min | Paraphrase (3) |
| 3 | 6 / 14 | 14 min | Time (6) |
| Total | 26 / 40 |
At 26, Farhana is around 6.5. Her biggest problem isn't English. It's time. She spent 24 minutes on Passage 1 and only had 14 for Passage 3.
Part F: Build a two-week plan
Farhana's plan:
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 7 | Time plan drills: Passage 1 in 17 minutes, every day (R07, R18) |
| 8 to 14 | Paraphrase tables after every passage (R32) |
| Day 15 | New full test, same strict marking |
If she gets even 4 more marks in Passage 3 just from better timing, she reaches about 30, which is around band 7.
Honest note
One test is one data point. Do this full process with at least three tests before deciding your real level.
