Reading · Unit 4: Band 7 to 8.5
R36: From 30 to 35+: what band 8 readers do differently
Target band 7.5 to 8.5
At band 7, you already know the question types and you can usually finish on time. So where do the last five marks hide? Usually in two places: a few careless slips, and the hardest questions in Passages 2 and 3. Band 8 readers aren't faster at everything. They're more precise where it counts.
Why this matters
A high Reading score can lift your overall band and cover a weaker skill. And for many students, Reading is the most "fixable" skill at the top level, because it's about method, not just English.
Where band 7 students lose marks
| Where | Typical loss | What band 8 readers do |
|---|---|---|
| Careless slips | 1 to 2 marks | Use a final check on every block |
| True/False/Not Given qualifiers | 1 to 2 marks | Highlight every qualifier (R31) |
| Writer's opinion (Yes/No/NG) | 1 mark | Separate the writer's view from others' views (R12, R38) |
| Matching information | 1 to 2 marks | Do it last and look for the type of information (R22) |
| Time pressure in Passage 3 | 1 to 3 marks | Finish Passages 1 and 2 faster (R18) |
Five habits of band 8 readers
1. They read the question more carefully than the passage.
They notice every word: main, only, according to the writer. Most wrong answers at this level come from misreading the question, not the passage.
2. They prove every answer.
For each answer, they can point to the exact words in the passage. If they can't, they look again or move on.
3. They don't overthink easy questions.
Band 7 students sometimes change correct answers because they think "it can't be this easy". If the proof is clear, trust it.
4. They manage time by passage, not by question.
They check the clock at the checkpoints (R07) and never let one question break the plan.
5. They review mistakes deeply.
After each test, they don't just check answers. They find out why each mistake happened (R41).
Try it yourself
Look at your last three Reading tests. Fill in:
| Test 1 | Test 2 | Test 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total score | |||
| Careless mistakes | |||
| Passage 3 score (out of 13 or 14) |
If careless mistakes are 2 or more, start there. That's the cheapest band 8 path. If Passage 3 is below 10, work on time and hard passages (R18, R37).
Honest note
Band 8 in Reading also needs strong vocabulary and a lot of reading experience. Strategy gets you close. A daily reading habit (R40) gets you the rest of the way. Give it time.
