R05: Why Reading feels so hard for Bangladeshi students

Target band 5.5 to 6

Many Bangladeshi students are surprised by IELTS Reading. They passed English in SSC and HSC. Some even studied in English medium schools. Then they open a Cambridge book and can't finish Passage 2 in time. If that's you, you're not alone, and it's not because you're bad at English. It's because IELTS Reading tests skills our school system didn't train.

Why this matters

If you understand why Reading is hard for you, you can fix the real cause. If you just think "my English is weak", you'll spend months learning vocabulary lists that don't solve the problem.

Reason 1: We learned to memorise, not to read fast

In many schools, English exams reward memorised answers and grammar rules. We read the same passage many times until we knew it. IELTS gives you a new 900-word text and expects you to understand it in 20 minutes. That's a completely different skill.

Reason 2: Not much reading for pleasure

Students who read English books, articles or news for fun build speed without trying. Many of us read English mostly for exams. So our reading speed in English is much slower than in Bangla.

Reason 3: Translating in our heads

When we read a hard English sentence, many of us translate it into Bangla to understand it. That doubles the time. It also makes paraphrase harder to spot. R20 covers this.

Reason 4: Unfamiliar topics

IELTS passages are often about European history, Australian animals, or American research. These topics feel far from our lives. But you don't need to know the topic. The test gives you everything. R37 helps with hard topics.

Reason 5: New question types

True/False/Not Given is not a normal school question. Many students have never seen "Not Given" before IELTS. It needs a new way of thinking. R11 explains it clearly.

Reason 6: Time pressure

A small study at Brac University with Bangladeshi IELTS test takers found Reading was the most difficult module for them, with time management as a major problem (Sultana, 2021). It was a small study, but it matches what many of us experience.

The good news

Every one of these reasons can be fixed:

Problem Fix Lessons
Slow reading Skim and scan; daily reading habit R06, R09, R39, R40
Translating Read in chunks, in English R20
Unfamiliar topics Use the passage, not your knowledge R13, R37
Not Given confusion Clear rules and practice R11, R12, R31
Time A fixed time plan R07, R14, R18

Try it yourself

Which of the six reasons applies to you most? Rank them from 1 (biggest problem) to 6 (smallest).

Honest note

Reading improves more slowly than Listening. Speed comes from many hours of reading, not from tricks. Strategies help a lot, but you also need a daily reading habit (R40). Give it at least six to eight weeks.
