Reading · Unit 1: Know the test
R03: Academic or General Training: which one do you need?
Target band 5.5 to 6
It happens more often than you'd think: students book the wrong IELTS test. Some take General Training when their university needs Academic. Others take Academic when their visa needs a UKVI test. Each mistake costs money and time, and sometimes a whole intake. This lesson helps you choose correctly before you pay.
Why this matters
The test fee in Bangladesh is a lot of money for most families. And many universities and visa systems will only accept one specific type. A great score on the wrong test can be useless.
What's the same and what's different
| Part | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Same test | Same test |
| Speaking | Same test | Same test |
| Reading | Academic texts from books, journals, magazines | Everyday texts: notices, adverts, workplace documents, a longer general article |
| Writing | Task 1: describe a chart, map or process. Task 2: essay | Task 1: write a letter. Task 2: essay |
Who usually needs which test
| Your plan | Usually needs |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's, Master's or PhD study abroad | IELTS Academic |
| Professional registration in some fields, like healthcare | Often IELTS Academic |
| Migration to countries like Canada or Australia | Often IELTS General Training |
| Work or training below degree level | Often IELTS General Training |
The key word is usually. Always check.
What about IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI is a version of IELTS approved for some UK visa purposes. It has the same content as the normal test, but it's taken under extra security rules, and it usually costs more.
Whether you need it depends on your course and your university. For many degree-level courses, UK universities accept normal IELTS Academic, but some courses, like some foundation or pre-sessional English courses, may require IELTS for UKVI. Don't guess. Ask your university directly, in writing.
How to check, step by step
- Go to the official English language requirements page of your university or programme.
- Look for the exact words: IELTS Academic, General Training, or IELTS for UKVI.
- Note the overall score and the minimum for each skill.
- If anything is unclear, email the admissions office. Save their reply.
- For visas, check the official government immigration website of that country.
A common mistake in Bangladesh
Some students take whichever test a friend or agent tells them to. Agents can be helpful, but they can also be wrong. Your university's official page is the final word, not anyone's opinion, including mine.
Try it yourself
Which test would you check for first?
- Rina wants to do a Master's in Germany, taught in English.
- Hasan wants to migrate to Canada for work.
- Mitu wants to join a pre-sessional English course in the UK.
Show the answers
1) IELTS Academic, but check the university page. 2) Usually General Training, but check the official immigration website. 3) Check carefully. It may need IELTS for UKVI.
Honest note
Rules change. Universities update their pages, and visa rules can change too. What was true for your cousin two years ago may not be true now. Always check the current official page before you book.
