Listening · Unit 5: Practice and exam day

L49: The last 7 days before your Listening test

Target all levels

The last week before IELTS is not the time to learn new things. It's the time to sharpen what you already know, protect your confidence, and get your body ready. Many students do the opposite. They panic, do three tests a day, sleep badly, and walk in exhausted. Here's a calmer, smarter plan.

Why this matters

Your English won't change much in seven days. But your performance can. A rested, confident student with good habits can score half a band higher than the same student tired and stressed.

What to stop doing this week

  • Stop learning new strategies. Stick with the methods you've practised.
  • Stop collecting new materials. No new books, no random websites.
  • Stop comparing yourself to friends. Their score isn't your score.
  • Stop studying late at night. Sleep matters more now.

The 7-day plan

Day What to do
7 days before Full Listening test under strict conditions. Mark it and note your top mistake type.
6 days before Review your mistake log. Redo the lesson for your top mistake type.
5 days before Full Listening test, then Reading straight after, in the morning.
4 days before Spelling list (L09) and number practice (L12). 30 minutes only.
3 days before Do the official computer familiarisation test once more. Check your route to the centre.
2 days before Light practice: one Part 1 and one Part 4. Then stop.
1 day before No tests. 15 minutes of a podcast you enjoy. Pack your ID. Sleep early.

Fix your sleep early in the week

If your test starts in the morning, your brain should be awake at that time. If you normally sleep at 2 am and wake at 10, start shifting your sleep from day 7. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier each night.

Your final review sheet

On day 6, make one page with your personal reminders. Keep it short. For example:

  • Read the word limit every time.
  • Wait for the final answer. Listen for but and actually.
  • Check plurals.
  • My hard words: accommodation, environment, Wednesday.
  • Missed one? 3-second rule.

Read this page on the morning of your test. Nothing else.

About confidence

In the last week, many students feel they know less than before. That feeling is normal, and it usually isn't true. Look at your mistake log and see how far you've come.

Try it yourself

Write your final review sheet today, even if your test is weeks away. You can update it later.

Honest note

If your practice scores are far below your target in the last week, it may be better to move your test date, if your timeline allows. Check the centre's rules on transfers and fees first. Taking the test before you're ready costs more in the end.
