Listening · Unit 5: Practice and exam day

L48: Exam day: headphones, sound check, and what to do if audio fails

Target all levels

You've prepared for months. Now it's the day. This lesson walks you through test day at a Bangladeshi test centre, from the night before to the moment the Listening test ends. Knowing what happens removes a lot of fear. Please remember that each centre has its own rules, so always read the instructions your test centre sends you.

Why this matters

Students lose marks on test day for reasons that have nothing to do with English. They arrive late and stressed. They don't report a sound problem. They panic when something unexpected happens. A calm, prepared student does better with the same English.

The night before

  • Check the time and address of your test centre. Plan for Dhaka traffic, or traffic in your city. Leave much earlier than you think you need to.
  • Put your ID in your bag. This is usually the passport you used to register. Without the right ID, you may not be allowed to sit the test.
  • Sleep. Don't do a full practice test the night before. A short, easy listening session is enough.

The morning

  • Eat a proper breakfast.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Test rooms can be cold because of air conditioning, so bring a light layer if allowed.
  • Arrive early. Check-in can take time.

At check-in

The centre will check your ID, and you may have your photo taken. You'll usually need to leave your bag, phone, watch and other belongings in a storage area. Only allowed items come into the room. Your centre will tell you what those are.

Before Listening starts: the sound check

On the computer test, you'll put on headphones and get a chance to check the sound. This is very important.

  • Adjust the volume until it's clear and comfortable.
  • If the sound is too quiet, crackling, or only in one ear, raise your hand immediately.
  • Don't be shy. Don't think "It's probably fine." Fixing it before the test starts is easy. Fixing it after is hard.

During the test

  • If anything goes wrong, like the audio stops or the computer freezes, raise your hand. Don't stay silent and hope.
  • Don't talk to anyone or look at other screens.
  • When Listening ends, you'll get about 2 minutes to check your answers. Then Reading usually starts.

Speaking day

Your Speaking test may be on the same day or a different day. Check your confirmation email for the exact time.

If something goes wrong

If you had a real problem during the test, such as a fault with the equipment, tell a staff member before you leave the centre. Ask how to make a formal complaint. Don't wait until your results come out.

Try it yourself

Write your own test day checklist on one page: ID, address, leaving time, breakfast, what to wear. Stick it on your wall a week before your test.

Honest note

Rules about what you can bring, check-in times and Speaking schedules can change and can differ between British Council and IDP centres. Always follow the instructions in your booking confirmation and on the official website.
