L02: What 23, 30 and 35 out of 40 really mean

Target band 5.5 to 6

Here's some good news. To get band 7 in Listening, you don't need 40 out of 40. You don't even need 35. You need around 30. That means you can get 10 questions wrong and still score a 7. Once you understand how the score works, the test feels much less scary.

Why this matters

Most universities don't just ask for an overall score. They ask for something like "6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0." So you need to know how many correct answers you need for your target. Then you can track your practice tests and know exactly how far away you are.

How Listening is scored

Each correct answer gets 1 mark. There's no negative marking, so never leave a box empty. Your raw score out of 40 is then changed into a band. Here are the approximate numbers from the official IELTS website:

Correct answers (out of 40) Approximate band
16 5
23 6
30 7
35 8

Scores between these points get half bands. For example, a score in the high 20s often gives 6.5. The exact numbers change a little from one test version to another.

How your overall band is worked out

Your overall band is the average of your four skills, rounded to the nearest half band. There are two rules that confuse people:

  • If the average ends in .25, it goes up to the next half band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5.
  • If the average ends in .75, it goes up to the next whole band. So 6.75 becomes 7.0.

Let's look at three students.

Student L R W S Average Overall
Rafi 7.0 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.25 6.5
Nusrat 7.0 7.0 6.5 6.5 6.75 7.0
Tanvir 6.5 6.5 5.5 6.0 6.125 6.0

Look at Rafi. His Listening 7 pulled his overall up to 6.5. That's why Listening is so valuable. It's often the easiest skill to push up, and it lifts your whole score.

What to do with this

  1. Write your target band for Listening on a piece of paper.
  2. Find the raw score you need from the table above.
  3. After every practice test, write your raw score next to it.
  4. Count how many marks you're short. That's your real gap. It's usually smaller than it feels.

Try it yourself

  1. You got 27 out of 40. Roughly what band is that?
  2. Your scores are L 6.5, R 6.0, W 6.0, S 6.5. What's your overall band?
  3. You need 7.0 in Listening. About how many mistakes can you make?
Show the answers

1) Around 6.5. 2) The average is 6.25, so your overall is 6.5. 3) About 10.

Honest note

These numbers are a guide, not a promise. The conversion table changes slightly between tests. When you use a Cambridge IELTS book, use the score table printed in that book, not one from the internet.
